Pasty Power - Upper Michigan's Lean Cuisine
Pasties are a favorite food of Michigan's Upper Peninsula
The pasty is a well known food specialty that has icon status in the northern reaches of the state of Michigan. The pasty-pie or pasty, as it is now known, is a simple "pie" type of food wrap that consists of carrots, potatoes, beef, onions, rutabaga or any other types of stew meat which is wrapped in a dough and cooked in an oven. It is popular, because it evolved in the early days of Michigan's lumber camps and mining towns where quick food was a necessity and work was a priority. This type of food is healthy and "filling" and became entrenched in the upper peninsula society. Pasty shops or "pasty-parlors" as they were once called, proliferated throughout the U.P. of Michigan back in the 60's and 70's and some still exist but many cafe's and restaurants still make and sell pasties, along with various grocery stores in many cities from Ironwood to Iron Mountain.
Yooperland and the pasty are synonymous with Michigan's upper peninsula. Cartoonist Dan Rosandich who specialized in Yooper Bloopers which appeared in many U.P. newspapers, had done pasty cartoons for The Houghton Mining Gazette and The Ironwood Daily Globe plusmany weekly newspapers from Manistique to Grand Marais.
